- In 1938, the Jewish widow Hanna Rosen moves to the "Stiege", a part of Hagen in Westphalia where Jews, Christians, Social Democrats and Communists alike live in close proximity, along with National Socialists and sympathizers. They all share a common problem: they are short on cash, and many of them are out of work. Increasing pressure is exerted by the Nazis on Jews and other nonconformists. Yet the Jews still try to maintain their habits, rites and religious feasts. The situation worsens. Jewish children have to leave Aryan schools, and shop-keepers regard Jews as undesirable customers.
Old Mrs. Rothstein commits suicide, and Dr. Hersch, who never made any distinction between Jew and Christian, emigrates. David's mother is appalled. The Rosens have always considered themselves Germans; David's father was a soldier during World War I. David's friends begin to withdraw under their parents' pressure. But there are also some people who will not be intimidated and who assist their neighbours - thereby risking their own lives. On November 9th, the windows of the Rosen flat are not spared, and their synagogue is on fire. Neighbours press the Rosens to emigrate, but the financial means are lacking. In 1942, their fight for a modest human existence comes to an end. Hanna and David Rosen mount the truck that is to take them to the concentration camp. 10 kilograms of personal belongings are allowed...

Carlo Ross was born in 1928. Life for him began on May 8th, 1945. This is when he began to work for various newspapers. Later on, he lived in Berlin as a journalist. Besides his work for newspapers, he founded a small publishing house and later lived a freelance writer. Carlo Ross died in 2004.
