dtv-Atlas Ceramics

An opulently illustrated work, combining the history of style and technics for the first time. A 'must' not only for amateurs and collectors.

The term 'ceramics' is normally applied to all kinds of shaped and fired products of clay, also for pottery, majolica and fayence, porcelaine and terracotta. The atlas comprises all of these facets. In a competent and exhaustive way, it offers a total survey on all raw materials and production technics up to the finished products, from artist's ceramics up to the ceramic coating of computer chips, from ceramics of the neolithic period to modern artist's ceramics of Picasso and Keith Haring.

The systematic first part informs about various forms of clay, technics of shaping, decorations, ornamentations and glazings, porcelaine colours, firing, porcelaine brands, dating procedures and restoration technics. It also gives practical advice to collectors, for example how to distinguish falsifications, and lists the relevant museums and their opening times.

The historical part at the end is of catalogue character, divided by countries and their individual development and characteristics of ceramic products.

The dtv-Atlas series started in 1964 with its bestselling dtv-Atlas World History. It has been widely acclaimed for its unique way of highlighting the topics of each volume in separate units, combining vivid graphics on the left-hand pages with concisely written explanations on the right.

The subject areas covered by the dtv-Atlas series range from history to natural sciences, from architecture to music, from philosophy to health. dtv-Atlases are designed to be reference books useful for both experts and curious readers. The series is being regularly extended, and each Atlas is revised and updated upon republication. A list of all dtv-Atlases, including the number of editions and copies sold, is available.
