Goethe's Women

Germany's most famous author loved women. Like in a gallery, this book presents in words and pictures both the most important women in his life as well as famous female characters from his works. Supported by biographical-historical descriptions, the fascinating interplay between real life and fiction reveals connections which escape the cursory glance: starting with his famous mother Elisabeth through various Charlottes up to Ulrike von Levetzow, whom the 74-year-old widower wooed in vain.

This book is both for pleasurable reading as well as a small reference book on Goethe's life and loves.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born August 28, 1749 in Frankfurt/Main and died March 22, 1832, in Weimar. His works markedly shaped the literary epochs of Sturm and Drang ("storm and stress") and the Weimar Classic period. They encompass all literary genres as well as autobiographical texts and essays on natural sciences. Goethe was in vivid contact with the leading minds of his time and his impact on literature is still unbroken. He is internationally recognized as the most eminent author of German literature.
