Erwin Schrödinger, the father of quantum mechanics, was an infamous bohemian and womaniser. So it is only natural that when Alex Gatlieb meets his new neighbour Balthasar Schrödinger, who claims to be the grandson of the great physicist, he is rather alarmed. His suspicions increase
when Schrödinger junior introduces himself as a professional "magician".
On a visit to his neighbour's house Gatlieb is allowed to see all the rooms save for one, the bedroom. This is his magic studio, his neighbour explains, and it is strictly out of bounds. However, Gatlieb has a strong suspicion that all the young mothers in the neighbourhood have found themselves in this bedroom, at some point - including his own wife. Driven by his jealousy, he makes a fatal exploratory foray ...
An entertaining short story on the laws of nature, as well as those which apply to psychology and jealousy, it also reveals something about Schrödinger's bedroom, in which a cat can be both dead and alive at the same time.
