Berrit can't wait to go on the school trip  to the North Sea island of Amrum. But her father doesn't share her enthusiasm. Without giving her any explanation, he forbids his daughter to take part, but luckily Berrit's mother intervenes on her behalf and she gets to go after all.

 

On the island , Berrit is nearly caught by the incoming tide while she's out walking on the mud flats. She has a narrow escape, as she sees a kite flying in the sky and follows it. The kite belongs to Karo, a girl who lives on the island, and the two girls soon become great friends. In the autumn half-term Karo goes to visit Berrit in her home town of Freiburg. Karo immediately feels at home there, although Berrit's father makes himself scarce. Berrit finds this strange and naturally she and Karo talk about it. And in the process she learns that Karo hasn't got a father. And then they put two and two together ….
