The Gulf States

Hermann's analysis examines the recent history of New Arabia, which he defines as the Arab states along the Persian Gulf as opposed to the conflict-ridden Cairo-Damascus-Baghdad axis. This part of the Middle East is experiencing a comeback and becoming part of history again. Here, the predominant mood is one of change.

Though accorded significant economic sway by their investments and interests, these countries no longer see themselves purely as oil suppliers; they are in the process of developing new concepts for the future that are progressively gaining influence even on conservative neighbours such as Saudi Arabia. The Arab Gulf States in particular are working hard towards developing a more up-to-date culture within a modern society.

Selected press cuttings on: › Quo Vadis Turkey? ‹ (2008):

  •  "Hermann gives us an astute analytical portrait of a state and society that is in the process of reinventing itself - a new, democratic and Islamic Turkey, warts and all. Hermann has achieved what German-speaking social scientists are still attempting to understand."

Neue Zürcher Zeitung

  • "Hermann's book is a must for anyone who wants to get a grip on Turkey's political dynamics."

Die Zeit

  • "Using historical analysis backed by thorough research, Hermann outlines Turkey's strengths as well as its crisis points. In his opinion, the oft-cited war on terror can only be won if the West is willing to cooperate with the moderate section of the Muslim world. In this light, Hermann discusses the attitudes of Turkish Islam towards authoritarian laicism, crediting the religion with a potential for reform."

Süddeutsche Zeitung
