The World Needs Small Giants As Well

There has never been such a small giant in Giant Country! Mac, his father, may call him Long John as long as he likes; he will not grow, no matter how much spinach he eats. The other kids in Giant Country mock him, and when he goes to school he cannot even see over his desk because he is so tiny.

But then one day he goes into a fit, kicks everybody around him and runs away. He runs and runs, right through the woods until he reaches the border of Giant Country, where the high black hedge grows. No giant is allowed to go beyond it. But Long John has nothing to lose anymore, so he climbs through a hole in the hedge to the other side. He is absolutely stunned: he has reached the country where human beings live! And what does he see there? A little girl even shorter than he is himself!

Marie likes the little giant just the way he is. And Long John has found a friend and realizes that there is also a need for small giants!

Irina Korschunow has a masterly talent of writing her way into the hearts of young readers. There is no child who does not know what it feels like to be laughed at by adults or children. As with her books "Hanno" and "Fuzzy Bear", she creates figures of solidarity, figures to encourage children to be happy just the way they are.
