Proclaimed in 1918 after the end of the First World War, the first German republic was ill fated from the outset. Exclusive responsibility for the war and the onerous provisions of the Versailles peace treaty were a heavy burden; authoritarian, nationalist and radical left- and right-wing currents undermined public confidence in a democratic state, as did economic crises, inflation and unemployment. Horst Möller vividly depicts the social, cultural, political and economic developments which took place during the Weimar Republic.
