De-coding the Butterflies

Peter Nauten leads the life of an amiable loner in post-war Germany. He is forced to accept early on that he’s unlikely to achieve much as far as acceptable middle-class values are concerned. His classical language studies end in disaster, he soon gets sacked from his position in an insurance agency, and his marriage fails. But then he gets a job as a waiter in a trendy Munich café, and dares to embark on the most ambitious challenge of his life: deciphering butterflies – in the hope that their secret code will finally shed light on the enigmas of the world.

  • a humorous and poetic parable about a likeable anti-hero, imbued with a melancholy sense of gravitas
