Neighbours

Anne Liebert fled to the West as a child just before the Wall came down. Later on she returned to East Berlin, eking out a living for herself and her daughter Marie as a geriatric nurse. One of her charges is quietly waiting for the end of his life—but when Anne coerces pensioner Karl Fritzsche into looking after Marie, a quiet but intense friendship develops between the little girl and the old man.

Meanwhile Hans, Hanna and Matthias explore the links of love, friendship and rivalry over a period of several years. Although driven apart by the East-West divide, they are destined to be reunited by the forces of betrayal and revenge.

Readers will find themselves deeply immersed in the lives of six people spanning the period between 1989 and 2006 in a moving episodic novel packed with wonderful tragi-comic stories of our times –and the longing for a different life.

  • »A poignant piece of contemporary German literature.«
