Purely by chance - because it's raining – Moritz takes refuge in a church, not really a place he is at all familiar with. And in there is this old woman who points out that actually you are meant to pay for the candles you light in a church. She lends him the money and he promises to pay her back. From this first chance encounter an unusual friendship develops between the old lady and the boy. They talk about god, the world, everything and anything. The woman tells him about her deeply held beliefs and her quite intimate relationship with god. This is all totally new to Moritz and it stimulates his curiosity. With the assistance of a young librarian he goes on to learn about the history of Christianity. A short introduction to the Christian religion, its history and the emotional dimensions of belief.
