Us Three from Number 4

Forget Bullerby – here comes Raven Street! As soon as Wenzel claps eyes on the brightly painted apartment building in a little side street of the big city, his heart starts pounding in his chest like a space-hopper. There’s a whiff of garlic hanging in the air and a hint of coffee and chips. All in all the place seems “a first-rate Wenzel-house" — four floors and a roof turret like an oversized witch’s hat. What does it matter that the building has seen better days? Its undiscovered nooks and crannies are chock-a-block with wonderful surprises: you can pitch a tent on the roof terrace, send letters through a pneumatic tube in the old fireplace or dine al fresco on the scaffolding. But the best thing about Number 4 is of course the children living there, because without Jorge, Helma and the others, the house — upstairs and down, inside and out — wouldn’t be half as much fun...
