The Fairy Hour

Iris is a quiet and rather reserved girl who isn’t particularly happy after changing schools. She misses not having a best friend, she’s afraid she may not be up to the challenges of the new secondary school - and it doesn’t help that her successful older sister is constantly being held up as some kind of unattainable ideal. During this troubled time she gets regular night-time visits from a fairy. Seleja takes Iris with her to fairyland and becomes her friend and confidante. Over the course of their conversations the fairy introduces Iris to the world of literature and tells her stories invariably relevant to her worries and troubles. Gradually the shy child opens up, gains confidence at home and at school, getting to know herself better in the process as well.

  • a clever little volume about a sensitive and insecure girl (a refreshing change in a world with an over-abundance of Girl Power!) - and a book that whets the young reader’s appetite for literature
