Therese - a black girl in the German Empire

In 1900, a child is born in Wuppertal. Therese’s father is the head of a group from Togo that performs at ethnological shows and colonial exhibitions. To spare the infant his grueling tour schedule, her father entrusts her to foster parents, the Hufnagels, who provide the girl with a loving home. It is not until later in life that Therese learns that the Togo troop left Germany and eventually moved on to Russia, where their trail is lost over the course of the First World War and the Russian Revolution. When the political situation comes to a head in the 1930s, Therese leaves her German home and travels to Togo, the homeland of her parents, a land completely unknown to her. Therese’s life represents a practically unknown chapter in Germany’s colonial history.

• An unusual life shaped by colonialism and nationalism
• Based on a true story discovered by the author on his travels in Togo
