Johannes Brahms

A Biography

From “wunderkind” to “Beethoven’s successor“: Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) produced his first compositions when he was in his early teens and was considered a child prodigy. By the end of his life he was regarded as one of the most famous composers of his time, even if critical opinion of his works varied greatly.

Malte Korff describes his rise to fame, his work as a conductor and pianist, his complicated private life and his relationship with other important contemporary composers such as Schumann, Liszt and Wagner.

In addition to compiling a portrait which does justice to Johannes Brahms’ complex and at times difficult personality, the author also provides readers with an introduction to his musical oeuvre.
