Quo vadis, Turkey?

Cultural conflict in Turkey

Turkey is often referred to as the »bridge to the East« and viewed with considerable suspicion from both sides of the bridge, by Europeans and the Arab-Muslim world. The contrasts within the country itself could hardly be more extreme, as, for example, between the rural region of Anatolia and the Turkish Riviera. They are reflected in the new and old elites. As a correspondent of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), Rainer Hermann has been following developments in Turkey for many years. The acclaimed expert presents a comprehensive study of the history of this country up to the present day, one whose future is of great significance for Europe, too.
