Epilogue, with Ducks

The story of a passionate but impossible love

“Berlin, 1976: one of the hottest summers on record. I was eighteen, an exchange student from West Germany; you were a twenty-five-year-old small-time dealer. It started just like they all do, those kinds of affairs—obsessive, insane, intoxicating. A state of delirium…”

Now, almost forty years later, she’s reminiscing: the trips through India and Afghanistan on the hippie trail; separations, reconciliations, the wedding in Norway, her daughter’s birth. Eventually they lose touch, but then he is struck down by cancer. And they make a last desperate attempt to find a happy ending to their interrupted romance.

• a compulsive novel about love, memories and the thrill of being on the road
• an epic journey through countries that have changed beyond recognition—or no longer exist at all
