The Enigma of the Chiemsee Cauldron

Myth, madness and reality: The Nazis' Holy Grail

In the summer of 2001, two divers discovered a cauldron weighing 11 kilos at the bottom of Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria. At first, the treasure hunters considered their find worthless junk or at best tarnished bronze, but later analysis revealed they had literally struck gold. Today, the value of the raw material alone would amount to around 450,000 Euros. Then, to public astonishment, government archaeologists dated the cauldron to the time of the Third Reich despite the apparently Celtic design of its ornamentation. The discovery subsequently disappeared from public view, only to resurface when it was offered for sale as the true Holy Grail by dubious profiteers in Switzerland.

Sascha Priester and Jörg Michael Seewald have researched and investigated this fascinating story, unearthing in the process a web of myth and conspiracy theories. Their eventual conclusion is that the Chiemsee treasure was the Unholy Grail of Nazi greed, made by order of the highest rank and hidden from view as the Second World War came to its conclusion.
