Biko’s Last Day

Goodbye to the best watchdog in the world

What Biko wants to do more than anything is just sleep. When asleep, he no longer feels the pain in his bones quite so much. But he has to watch out for things. The children. The house. The cat and the birds in the garden. And the garden fence. If only he were not so tired all the time. Eventually, his master picks him up and carries him to the car. At the veterinarian's office, the older child leans down to Biko’s ear. “It’s alright,” he says. “From now on, we’ll look after each other.” Biko is puzzled. How are they going to look after each other? They’re only humans, after all. But Biko is relieved. Now he can close his eyes and never has to open them again.

Many children live with beloved pets that are aging and sick. This book quietly and gently addresses this day-to-day reality.

- A comforting treatment of the subject “when a pet dies”
- An important and strong picture book with touching illustrations
