The Video Murderer

»I was asked to write everything down.«

It is with this opening sentence that the first-person narrator begins his account of an Easter weekend, which he and his partner spend visiting another couple in Styria. Against a backdrop of intensive media coverage of the double murder of two children which took place on Good Friday, and which the murderer is alleged to have filmed with his video camera, the four friends spend their time watching TV, playing cards, sitting around in the kitchen and chatting. On the one hand they are disgusted, on the other fascinated and revelling in the sheer sensationalism of it all.

Meanwhile, outside in the real world, the frenzied search for the murderer is under way, and the friends also follow this on television, even though the nationwide manhunt has already reached the forest behind the house where they are staying and, eventually, the house itself is searched. On Easter Sunday the narrator is arrested. Thus the wheels of fate and those of the media circus come full circle.

The shocking record of a double murder cold-bloodedly enacted for the media, a disturbing novel about the dangerous power of television, and a breathtaking thriller about the lust for sensation at any price.

Press Comments: »A disturbing game planned and executed with disturbing perfection (…). If there were nothing else to commend this author, his astonishing craftsmanship would suffice (…). A novel composed in cold blood, which reaches its denouement with such single-mindedness that we cannot conceive for one moment that with the solution] anything has been resolved.« Neue Zürcher Zeitung

»Thomas Glavinic's outstanding and overwhelming book ›Der Kameramörder‹ is not so much about a murder as about the video camera that was present, and that is why the story comes closest to reality when it loses itself in its own reflection.« Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
