Wild Shoots

Three women on a farm

In the eyes of Lisbeth, an aging well-to-do farmer, there is nothing more important than the farm. Its preservation is what gives meaning to her life. She has never questioned the duties that come with it.
But with daughter-in-law Marlies, a new woman comes into the house, one who sees no value in living the life of a farmer's wife without complaint and who has her own dreams. The department store in the neighboring town becomes a site of longing for Marlies in 1960s Germany. She wants to work there and to get her own hunting and tractor licenses. Life should offer more than this. From then on, the two women wage quiet battles over household management and child rearing. But actually much bigger things are being negotiated: lifestyle models, ideas about what it means to be a woman and to be a mother. And yet there is a unifying element between these two very different women: Marlies' daughter Joanna, who ultimately goes her own way.

• Clearly and empathically, Ute Mank tells the story of three female ways of life - in a struggle for self-determination, recognition and freedom
• For readers of Dörte Hansen and Joanna Trollope
