But?

Literary essay meets satire – in unmistakable Goldt style

»His works are the most humorous that German literature has to offer ... it is not accidental that anyone reading his perfect syntax will often be reminded of Thomas Mann ... Both create humour out of self-important mannerisms, out of ironic over-exaggeration of the linguistic material. But Goldt brings this material face-to-face with something entirely different: media psychobabble, and every register of vernacular and slang.« - Daniel Kehlmann.

But?’ contains a wide variety of pieces, including essay, critique, short play and aphoristic note, all showcasing the author’s quintessential style and unique status in the literary world.

  • »I can’t think of another author anywhere who drifts off on tangents with such enthusiasm and consistency, to touch en passant the fundamental questions of human existence.« Süddeutsche Zeitung
  • The tender humanity, playful humour and intelligence of Max Goldt’s writing make his literature the epitome of German ‘camp’
