Almanci Girl – How I Taught Myself to Be German
How can she be so German?
‘Imitation German’ – that’s what Tülin’s mother calls herself, even after more than fifty years in Germany. Tülin, born in Neukölln, Berlin, has been grappling with similar questions ever since childhood: How German can – or must – I be? There are no firm answers in this search for identity. For Tülin, it’s a constant balancing act: In Germany, she´s the Berlin-based second-generation migrant; in Turkey, she´s the Almanci girl. Writing with humour and a keen insight into human nature, Tülin describes the moments that have shaped her, strengthened her or even wounded her, sharpening her eye for personality, idiosyncrasy and cliché. Her job as a civil servant (how very German!) completes the picture: As a comedian, Tülin transforms stereotypes into flesh-and-blood characters, enthralling German audiences on Instagram and on stage.
