The Bramble Summer

Germany in the early 1950s: the memory of war is still fresh but the people’s hearts are full of hope. Against this background, childhood friends Karl and Theo find themselves in love with the same woman. Although Viola is Theo’s wife, Karl begins an affair with her after his own marriage fails. Over the course of a carefree and passionate summer the three of them share what little they possess and find themselves discovering life anew.

But as the summer draws to a close, Viola discovers she is pregnant. She decides to stay with her husband, but the unusual relationship between the three of them remains intact. In a time of devastating loss, the bonds of friendship outweigh the shackles of love.
