The Betrayal of the Self
Non-Fiction, Social Studies / Cultural Studies, Psychology, Bestseller, Bestseller Non-Fiction
Preface by Gaetano Benedetti
The concept of autonomy, which does not mean power and superiority but full conformity of a human being to his feelings and needs, is an important factor of modern psychology. If this autonomy is lacking - more often the rule than the exception - dependance, subjection, power and domination prevail. This is a book that deals with an elementary dimension of human "co-existence".
Arno Gruen, born in 1923 in Berlin, emigrated to the United States in 1936 where he attained his doctorate in 1961 in psychoanalysis (Theodor Reik). He was a professor and therapeutist at various universities, clinics and as a private practitioner. Since 1979, he lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland.
