A Long Night
Ludwig doesn’t know who he is anymore. Since failing to qualify as a lawyer, he no longer feels in control of his own destiny. Yes, he soon finds employment as the manager of a firm that imports cheap cotton from Pakistan – but it all seems unreal. And who is Bella, the aloof married woman he has taken on as a secretary? While the company’s fortunes go from strength to strength, a passion develops between Ludwig and Bella, and he finds himself acting in ways he would never have thought possible.
Martin Mosebach’s novel is not only a tender and ironic portrait of a confused young man, it also examines the insecurities that go hand in hand with love.
“Magnificent writing ...redolent of Thomas Mann.’’ – Lutz Hagestedt, Süddeutsche Zeitung
“Mosebach is an exquisitely astute observer and an even better story-teller…not just a writer, but a true poet.” - Martin Ebel, Neue Zürcher Zeitung
