Bonn, 1948: A woman on her deathbed in Johannes Hospital replays scenes from her life. Gussie Zinsser was 24 when she married widower Konrad Adenauer, 19 years her senior, becoming stepmother to his three children. Over the years, she gives birth to five more. Gussie, wife of the Lord Mayor of Cologne, is in the public eye, and becomes more and more politically active in her own right.
