Light Breaks Before It Shines
Commercial Fiction, Fiction
A story about close friendships and first love, about letting go, and about the fact that life can hurt – but also feel good
It had been 19-year-old Virginia’s dream to attend college in Berlin, but indulging her mother – who is emotionally codependent on her daughter – she decides to enroll at her local university instead. Fortunately, when she attends an unconventional and politically active university group, she meets outsiders just like herself: Dilara, a devout Muslim and activist; Benny, a pansexual YouTuber; and Russian-German Sascha, who has one affair after another. All four of them struggle with their own challenges, and an unusual group dynamic develops that reflects how essential friendship is in our day-to-day lives.
- The debut novel of a young author who has accurately captured the mood of her generation - intelligent, critical, young, provocative
- Clever, critical, fresh, cynical, and provocative – yet hugely accessible
