Unwanted Goods

»Definitely not fit for purpose. Please return.«

In a near-future Berlin, Bruno drifts through life as a city tour guide, film-set worker and reluctant survivor of his own past. When episodes of blackouts and flashbacks start, Bruno is forced to confront the events he has spent decades avoiding: a childhood marked by violated boundaries, experiences of sexual coercion and the habit of making himself smaller for the comfort of others.

Told in a darkly funny voice that never shuts up because silence seems too dangerous, this novel moves between present-day absurdity and painful recollection, revealing a profound story about shame, male vulnerability, trauma and love.

  • An urgently contemporary exploration of masculinity, vulnerability and violence
  • For readers of Édouard Louis, Bryan Washington and Benedict Wells
