Suddenly, nothing is the way it used to be
A young woman travels to the Danish island of Fanø with her mother. Their relationship is strained and they evidently consider the trip as a make-or-break experiment. But on the island they are implicated in a serious car crash and the mother sustains partial amnesia. The consequences are bizarre: she is suddenly a woman transformed – for the better. They are having hitherto inconceivable conversations. Feelings are laid bare as they discuss emotions they would never before have admitted. And in the end a secret is revealed which shakes the family framework to the core.
A wonderfully atmospheric modern family novel that delineates the paths and wrong turns of the entire cast of characters in evocative detail and with great psychological finesse. Convincing in both style and expression, this is an utterly compelling debut.
