Children From The Past
When today’s grown-ups were children, they were told many stories about the postwar period. What it was like to play amongst the ruins or stand in line for hours for a couple of potatos. Or about the men returning from the prison camps years and years after the end of the war. Those were touching stories and nowadays there are not that many left to tell them.
CHILDREN FROM THE PAST revives the everyday life of those days. Recently re-discovered children’s pictures by photographer Karl Heinz Mai have inspired the author Herbert Günther to describe snap-shots from an imaginary childhood. The combination of actual photographies with fictitious stories results in a riveting and intriguing mixture.
Photographer Karl Heinz Mai (1920 – 1964) lost both legs as a soldier during the war. In his wheelchair and armed with his camera, he documented everything he saw in his nearly destroyed hometown of Leipzig.
