The Book of Class
Is our life an unfair game?!
Children want everything to be fair. But they soon learn that some people are privileged and others can’t get ahead, even if they try. Because they take their world for granted, it’s a long time before they recognize that differences in background create this unfair situation. It’s essential that children already recognize this. Our “Book of Class” starts as early as possible in education: It opens children’s eyes to the “fine distinctions” that Pierre Bourdieu described. Using the example of an elementary school class, Gerda Raidt shows where these distinctions come into play in people’s lives, whether in how they live, what they eat, the way they speak, in sports or their access to culture. This makes impressively clear which parts of one’s future are predetermined – in an unnoticed manner – early on.
